Vinyl Listening Bars, Cafes and Coffee Houses

Places to sit down, have a drink or a coffee and hear records played on a good sound system, from Tokyo jazz kissa to Brooklyn hi-fi bars and Seoul LP bars. 107 venues in 11 countries, hand-picked for strong reviews. 24 of them also sell records.

Kissa (喫茶): where the idea comes from

Kissa is Japanese for a coffee house (short for kissaten). In a jazz kissa or listening kissa, the owner chooses the records, a serious hi-fi system fills the room and guests come to sit and listen, often quietly. The tradition grew in the decades after the war, when imported records and good audio gear were expensive. It is the root of today's listening bars, vinyl cafes and record-shop bars, from Tokyo and Kyoto to Brooklyn, São Paulo and Seoul.

How The Vinyl Vine carries the idea: many crawls end with a Last Stop Suggestion, a nearby room to sit down with a record playing; venues carry their own badge (listening bar, vinyl cafe or record shop and bar) with an also sells vinyl tag; and listening-bar crawls such as the Seoul Kissa Trail string the best rooms together.

What is a listening bar?

A listening bar is built around the music: a record collection, a serious sound system and a room where people come to listen. The idea traces back to Japan's jazz kissa and music bars. Many are small, some ask you to keep your voice down, and several charge a small cover or take cash only. We note that in each listing when reviewers mention it.

Do they sell vinyl?

Some are also record shops or cafes with records for sale, and those are marked also sells vinyl. For the rest, we found no sign of sales, so ask at the bar.
