Kissa · (kee-sah)

Kissa: the art of listening

In Japan, a kissa (short for kissaten, a coffee house) is a small room where people go to drink coffee and hear records. In a jazz kissa or listening kissa, the owner picks the records, a serious hi-fi system fills the room, and the point is to sit quietly and listen. The tradition took off in the decades after the war, when imported records and good audio gear were expensive and a coffee bought you an afternoon with them.

The record is the host. Everyone else is a guest.

Variations of the idea now run around the world, from Tokyo's tiny jazz rooms to Brooklyn hi-fi bars and Seoul's LP bars, where you write a request on a slip of paper and the owner finds it in the wall of records.

How the Vinyl Vine carries it

  1. The Last StopMany crawls end with a Last Stop Suggestion: after a day of digging, one nearby room to sit down with a drink while a record plays. It is the kissa idea at the end of the route.
  2. Venue badgesListening bars, vinyl cafes and record-shop bars carry their own badge in the directory, with an also sells vinyl tag when you can take a record home. Over 90 are listed.
  3. Listening-bar crawlsWhole routes built around the sound system, from Shibuya and Kyoto to Brooklyn, São Paulo and Seoul, plus road trips that chain them together.

Everything for a day in the bins

One place for the part before you walk in, and the part after you leave with a stack.

A directory built by diggers

2,500+ record stores in 1,100+ cities, from Atlanta to São Paulo to Seoul, Edinburgh and Dublin. Each listing has hours, what the shop is known for, and an insider tip.

A crawl planner that checks the clock

Pick your stops, set a budget, and see which shops will be closed by the time you get there. Add coffee, meals, bars, and hotels along the route, then follow it one stop at a time.

A want list that knows your pressing

Note the exact variant you're after. Finding a different pressing won't close the item out, so your most wanted copy stays on the list.

Challenges built with the community

Official challenges like the Vinyl Vine Scavenger Hunt, plus a place to suggest and vote on the next ones. When you finally land a grail, the app makes a moment of it.

A global movement for people who love vinyl

The Vinyl Vine is built for vinyl lovers and anyone who cares about their local vinyl community. We believe record stores are more than shops. They're where discovery happens, conversations start, friendships form, and culture stays alive.

That's why we're organizing record store crawls all over the world, helping people bring their communities together to visit 3 to 5 local record stores in one day. Each crawl is a fun, low-stress plan: you and your crew follow a simple route, browse together, share recommendations, and help keep neighborhood businesses busy and thriving.

This isn't just an idea we post. We're here to help you host. The Vinyl Vine gives you the structure and tools to get started fast, then encourages you to share your route and highlights so other cities can join in and repeat the magic. The more communities that host, the bigger the movement becomes.

Local businesses matter. Community matters. Vinyl culture matters.

Support and promote the Vine, organize your crawl, and help us keep record stores rocking, together.
